Practise your HSK vocabulary

Practise the vocabulary you could be tested on

Practise the vocabulary you could be tested on in your next HSK with our flashcards; multiple choice, true/false, pairs matching exercises; and text analyser.

Select your vocabulary

Navigate to the vocabulary list for the HSK level that you are working towards (see here if you are unsure) and apply any filters (eg. to include vocabulary from previous levels and/or only show items you have bookmarked).

Select your practice type

Click on the middle “Free practice” button above your filtered vocabulary list. Then choose from the 3 main types of practice:

Each type is described below.

Word Flashcards

The first type is “Word Flashcards”:

At the top, you can adjust which level you want to practise the vocabulary for and whether you want to draw from all items or only those you have/have not bookmarked.

On the left, you can adjust how many of the words from the pool you want to practice at a time. By default, we will randomly select 10 words for you but you can increase that number to 20 or 30. You may also manually select up to 30 specific items.

On the right, you can choose which information you want to be prompted with (“Question”) and tested on (“Answer”): the English meaning of the word; the audio/Pinyin for the sound of the word; or the Chinese characters for the word.

Then click “launch” in the bottom right to generate the flashcards and go through them.

Word Practice

The second type is “Word Practice”:

The selection options are the same as for “Word Flashcards” above, except that on the right:

  • For sound, you may choose either audio (“sound”) or “Pinyin”

  • You have a choice of three kinds of exercise

Analyse Text

The third type is “Analyse a Text.” Simply paste (or type) up to 500 characters of text, choose whether you wish to identify HSK or YCT vocabulary, and then click “Analyse.”

The feature will first generate an audio file for the text, which you can play back at different speeds and download to play on other devices if you wish.

It will also identify all the different vocabulary items from the HSK or YCT vocabulary lists, highlighting them in different colours according to the level at which they are first introduced. Below the text, click on the tab for any level to isolate characters from that level and how many times each occurs in the text.

This feature helps you to identify from different contexts the vocabulary you know and the items you still need to work on at each level. It also helps you to identify suitable passages to practice with, allowing you to listen and read through them until you are confident.
